Keweenaw Signage: Capturing the Historical Essence of a Community

Each image showcases the typography, color palettes, and visual components of the Keweenaw's buildings and signs.
Preserving these signs through photography has become an interest of mine. Capturing the form of a building during a specific time in history is surprisingly rewarding. Serving as testaments to the past, these signs reflect the evolution of local commerce and industry found in the Keweenaw, bringing a sense of nostalgic charm. These signs bind together the threads of the past and the aspirations for a brighter future.

I hope to inspire others to appreciate and acknowledge the significance of signage on buildings. These visual artifacts tell tales of the region's past, the struggles overcome, and the resilience ingrained in the community's identity.

Since capturing these images a handful of keys to buildings have been exchanged to new owners and structures have even been torn or burnt down.

By documenting these signs and buildings, I aim to celebrate their importance, ensuring they will remain a part of the collective memory and narrative, reminding us of the Keweenaw’s history for years to come.
